In the piece Light and Darkness, I explore the fragile boundary between shadow and light. In this new composition, light and dark are not simple opposites, but part of an inner journey. They are inseparably connected — without darkness there is no light, and without light there is no darkness. The choir sings “light” briefly and almost staccato, like small rays of light gently seeping in. In contrast, “darkness” is sung in long, sustained lines, giving the shadow weight and depth. The soloist expresses the emotions that can arise in the search from darkness to light and back again — hesitant, withdrawing at times, then optimistic and fully surrendered. The music is filmic and minimalist, with elements of minimal music, yet it also contains lyrical passages. Even within the music itself, this contrast can be heard.
